If you’re in or near Auburn, Washington, this holiday season, you’d better brace yourself for a sugar rush. The annual Gingerbread Contest at the Auburn Community & Events Center is here to make your holidays a little sweeter—and maybe a bit competitive. This free event is all about celebrating the holidays with creativity, community spirit, and a whole lot of frosting.

What’s the Deal With This Contest?

The Gingerbread Contest isn’t just about slapping some candy on a cookie house. Oh no, this is serious business. Each entry must be no larger than 2 feet by 2 feet and must be built entirely in 2024. Plus, at least 90% of the exterior has to be edible. So yes, that gumdrop roof and pretzel fence? They better be snackable! Whether you’re building a traditional gingerbread house or going wild with something like a spaceship or igloo, the sky—or your sugar tolerance—is the limit.

The contest is open to both youth and adults, with separate categories for each. Voting is done by the public, so contestants will need to impress not just the judges but also their neighbors and friends. And let’s face it—winning bragging rights in a gingerbread contest is way cooler than anything else you’ll accomplish this year.

When Can You See the Sweet Creations?

The gingerbread masterpieces will be on display from December 4 through December 18 during the Auburn Community & Events Center’s normal business hours. Here’s when you can drop by:

  • Monday through Thursday: 7:00 AM – 8:00 PM
  • Friday: 7:00 AM – 7:00 PM
  • Saturday: 9:00 AM – 12:00 PM

Keep in mind that hours may vary during the week of December 16. Check ahead if you’re planning a visit then.

How Does Voting Work?

Voting is open to everyone who visits the display during business hours. You’ll get to cast your vote in two categories—youth and adult. The winners will be announced on Thursday, December 19, so make sure to stop by before then to support your favorite sugary structure.

The Rules of Gingerbread Glory

For those thinking about entering next year (sorry folks, this year’s spots are already full), here are some key rules:

  • Your creation must be original and built in the same year as the contest.
  • It must be appropriate for all ages—so no gingerbread zombies or questionable themes.
  • Entries must be dropped off at the Auburn Community & Events Center on designated dates.
  • Only 15 entries are allowed each year, so if you’re serious about competing, mark your calendar early!

Why Attend?

Even if you’re not competing, this event is worth checking out. It’s free, family-friendly, and full of creative inspiration. Plus, it’s a great way to support local talent while soaking up some holiday cheer. Whether you’re marveling at an intricately designed gingerbread castle or chuckling at a lopsided candy cane chimney, there’s something magical about seeing what people can create with sugar and imagination.

And hey, if you’re feeling inspired after seeing all those gingerbread creations, why not try building one at home? Just don’t blame us if your kitchen ends up looking like a frosting explosion.

Got Questions?

For more information about the Gingerbread Contest or if you have any burning questions (like whether candy canes count as structural supports), reach out to Amanda Valdez at avaldez@auburnwa.gov or call 253-931-3043. She’ll have all the answers—or at least point you toward someone who does.

So there you have it! Mark your calendars for December 11 and head over to Auburn Community & Events Center to witness some of the most creative (and delicious-looking) holiday displays around. Whether you’re voting for your favorite or just enjoying the festive vibes, this event promises to be a highlight of the season.
