The Roanoke Inn is a testament to Mercer Island’s history, having continuously served the community since 1914. Established by George Macguire during a time when dairy farms and deer hunting grounds characterized the island, this establishment quickly became a fixture in local life. Its location just a block from the ferry terminal connecting Mercer Island to Kirkland and Leschi positioned it perfectly as a weekend destination for both islanders and visitors from across Lake Washington.

The Beginnings

What began as a convenient stopping point evolved into a beloved institution, with Roanoke’s inviting atmosphere, hearty fare, and refreshing beverages drawing crowds decade after decade. As Mercer Island transformed from a rural outpost to a suburban community, the Roanoke adapted while maintaining its essential character. The inn’s enduring appeal lies in its ability to preserve a sense of continuity amid change, offering each new generation of islanders a connection to their community’s roots while serving as a welcoming gathering place.

In 1941, a significant chapter in Roanoke’s history began when the Reeck family purchased the establishment. Under their management, the inn continued to thrive, maintaining its reputation as a community cornerstone through decades of social and economic transformation. The Reeck family’s commitment to preserving the essence of Roanoke while adapting to changing community needs ensured its continued relevance. This dedication received formal recognition in 1976 when the State of Washington designated the Roanoke Inn as an official historical landmark, acknowledging its cultural and historical significance.

Community and History Significance

The landmark status cemented what locals already knew—that the Roanoke represented something special and worth preserving. The designation helped protect the physical structure while highlighting the establishment’s role in the island’s development and community life. Throughout its history, Roanoke has stood as a witness to Mercer Island’s evolution from a rural farming community to a residential area, maintaining its position as the island’s oldest continuously operating business through world wars, economic fluctuations, and demographic shifts.

Today, the Roanoke Inn proudly uses its slogan as a place, “Where Friends Meet Friends,” continuing its tradition as a social center for Mercer Island residents. The establishment has navigated the challenges of modern business while preserving the warm, welcoming atmosphere that has been its hallmark for generations. Islanders and visitors can stay connected with Roanoke’s current events and offerings through its social media presence on Instagram and Facebook, where the inn shares updates about special events, menu offerings, and community initiatives, blending traditional hospitality with contemporary communication.
